Project Duration: 5 weeks
Spring Semester 2026
El Gallo is a paper mask focused on simple, universal assembly and clear communication of the defining aspects of a rooster.
Design language draws from the significance of roosters in hispanic culture; most notably as symbols of protection, masculinity and courage.
Form inspiration
Inspired by soft, rounding curves separated by sharp creases and a "low-poly" structure. Thought was also given to how light would interact with the mask.
Sketch concepts
Digital sketching started with basic outlines and eventually moved towards more complex overlapping shapes. The eye cutout showed to be a very defining feature of the design.
Early prototypes
Exploring different bending and creasing techniques to establish singular elements while exploring strategies for wearability.
Refining the shape
Taking the insights gained from the early prototypes and working towards a full mask with finalized shapes and features.
connection tabs
The same slot and tab connections that hold the individual pieces together were again used to connect each mask element to each other.
Instruction Sheet
Due to the symmetric design of the mask, assembly consists of simple repeatable steps conveyed in a clip-art style. This graphic representation sidesteps any language or age barriers that might arise when detailing steps with words.
